Diagnosis can be made using biopsies, surgical pieces, or in some cases cytology techniques. Samples must be processed appropriately, studied with microscopic analysis and, almost always, submitted to complementary diagnostic techniques – immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, molecular biology…
The department’s activities include diagnostics, consultancy and attending physicians, patients and family members. Departmental work procedures follow rigorous internal and external quality controls. In particular, the department participates in the quality control program of the Spanish Society for Anatomic Pathology (SEAP) and is also submitted to regular quality audits by our affiliate in Houston.
In anatomopathological diagnosis in oncology appropriate clinical correlation is essential – furthermore, the clinical management of the patient requires the expert opinion of experienced pathologists. Therefore, all the department staff are fully integrated and take an active part in the different units and departments at the center.
