Central Venous Line

Placement of a flexible plastic tube into a large caliber vein in the chest, neck, or groin performed by the physician. This line allows for administration of drugs which cannot be administered by a peripheral line, such as parenteral nutrition, and drawing blood without the need to puncture a vein of the patient. It also requires some special care by nursing staff. See Central venous catheter.
